On the 27th and 28th October 2017, Institute of Shariah Governance and Islamic Finance (ISGaiF), IBS, UUM was invited to participate in the 13th International Conference on Tawhid and Maqashid Shariah in the Mainstream Economics. Themed “Trade Versus Riba (Interest) for Global Wellbeing, the conference was organized by Trisakti University in collaboration with Universitas Esa Unggul, Jakarta, Indonesia. The Director of ISGaif, Prof Dr. Rosylin Mohd Yusof was one of the invited keynote speakers together with Prof. Dr. Masudul Alam Choudhry, Visiting Professor, University Malaya and Prof. Dr. Bambang Brodjonegoro, Minister of National Development Planning, Indonesia.

In her keynote speech entitled “Islamic Global Wellbeing: Here come the Millennials”, Prof Rosylin highlighted the significance of the market demographic of Muslim Millennials in asserting their values, and requiring companies to provide products and services that meet their faith-based needs. With 29 percent of global young population projected to be Muslims by 2030, the Muslim millennials are more technologically oriented than previous generations, more brand-loyal and expect instant access to information. The Islamic finance industry therefore needs to be more dynamic, proactive and innovative to cater the financing needs of these individuals and to create more value based products towards promoting global wellbeing.

The conference also saw a total of eighteen (18) presented papers covering wide topics ranging from Islamic Economics, Islamic Finance, Halal, Insurance, Zakah to E-commerce. This conference serves as an ideal platform for aspiring young scholars, researchers, academicians and industry players to share their research findings and experiences as well as develop networking for the common objective of further promoting Islamic economics and Islamic finance. At the end of the conference, Perbanaz Institute Jakarta and Trisakti University expressed their interests for research collaborations with ISGaIF. It is hoped that these research collaborations will be the beginning of other academic collaborations that will benefit respective institutions. Ameen
